![]() Respiratory/ VentilatorWeaning ProcessThe Treatment Team consists of the various professional disciplines assigned to each resident. Upon admission, the team evaluates the resident’s condition and needs and devises a Comprehensive Care Plan detailing each discipline’s interventions to meet the resident’s holistic needs. The goal is to promote the resident’s health and function at the maximum attainable levels. Licensed Respiratory Therapists monitor the resident’s equipment and respiratory function. They administer any necessary treatments and evaluate the resident’s capabilities via diagnostic tests and clinical evaluations. When applicable, a weaning protocol will be initiated under the direction of the Specialist in Pulmonary Medicine. Weaning entails a gradual adjustment of the ventilating equipment, subject to the resident’s tolerance, progressing to increasing periods off the ventilator until there is no longer a dependency. Weaning is a step-by-step process during which the resident’s condition and response are continually monitored. The ultimate goal is to remove the tracheostomy and achieve independence from oxygen supplementation. We are pleased to have successfully weaned a significant proportion of residents, many of who came to us after prolonged ventilator dependency.
